Project overview

Taylor House demonstrates one of the central ideas behind Kazan: move complexity into design and fabrication so that the building arrives as a coordinated, understandable package an owner-builder can assemble.

The owner assembled the complete Kazan package; total project cost was less than half of local residential construction benchmarks.

01

Designed for assembly

A building system an owner can understand.

Conventional construction often leaves coordination to a succession of trades on site. At Taylor House, the timber frame, heavy tongue-and-groove panels and enclosure sequence were resolved together before construction began.

That preparation allowed the owner to assemble the building without a specialist framing crew. The project is practical evidence that owner-building can extend beyond a simple cabin when the system itself is designed around clear sequencing and repeatable connections.

02

Material clarity

Structure and finish are the same material.

Inside, the heavy timber frame and panel surfaces remain exposed. The result is a warm, durable interior without adding a separate layer of conventional wall and ceiling finishes over the structure.

Outside, the compact black-clad form gives little indication of how much wood is visible within. That contrast lets the house feel contemporary without losing the directness of a timber building.

03

Cost

Self-building changed the project economics.

Owner assembly, a coordinated package and fewer interior finish layers helped bring the completed project in at less than half the prevailing local benchmark for residential construction.
