Project overview

Moberly Mountain Home was built as a working test bed: not only for the timber structure and enclosure, but for the way mass timber, concrete and radiant heat can work together as one comfortable, low-demand building.

Reported annual heating costs are approximately one quarter of a comparable conventionally built home using electric resistance heat.

A full-scale test

The system extended well beyond the shell.

Ennadai fabricated much of the house in addition to the Kazan structure: doors, concrete countertops, interior concrete panelling and custom radiant-heating chandeliers. That wider scope made the home a useful place to resolve how the structural system, services and finishes meet in real life.

The finished interior keeps the main materials legible. Exposed timber carries the loads and forms the ceilings, while concrete surfaces add durability and another layer of thermal mass.

Comfort strategy

Store heat, then release it slowly.

A modern wood-pellet stove supplies heat to radiant piping in the walls and custom overhead fixtures. The mass timber roof and floor assemblies, together with the concrete panels, absorb and release that heat gradually rather than allowing fast indoor temperature swings.

In summer, active solar shading and night cooling use the same thermal mass in reverse. With proper operation, the house has remained comfortable without air conditioning even as outdoor temperatures approach the mid-30s Celsius.

Performance in use

The demonstration produced operating evidence.

The project gave Ennadai a real occupied building in which to test envelope details, heating distribution and seasonal comfort. Its operating results now inform later generations of the Kazan system.
